Derek Eder for Oak Park Village Trustee
Published on Oct 1, 2026

Today I am officially launching my campaign for Oak Park Village Trustee.
Last year, I was appointed to the Board as a climate champion, civic technologist, and progressive. Since then, I have championed programs and grants to help residents transition to clean energy in their homes, protect our residents from the abuses of ICE and mass surveillance, and to make Oak Park a more affordable, safer, and healthier place to live.
I am so proud of all we have accomplished for Oak Park in the last 14 months, and I am eager to continue serving this Village that I love.
That is why, come April 6, 2027, I am asking for your vote.
These are my priorities:
Climate Action
My main motivation to serve is to fight against climate change at the local level so that I can give my kids and yours a livable planet to inherit. While climate change is a global problem, local actions and policies are proven to drive change and innovation.
In my time serving on the board and in partnership with the Office of Sustainability and Oak Park Climate Action Network, I have led the expansion of our Climate Ready grants for homes and businesses, created rebates for electric appliances, reduced permit fees for clean heating and water, and launched the Oak Park Energy Navigator program to help homeowners navigate the electrification process.
Data-driven decisions
As a programmer and civic technologist, all of my decisions are backed by data and research. When I voted to cancel our contract with Flock to remove their license plate reader cameras, I knew it was the right decision because we had the data to prove how their system was being abused. When I voted for our comprehensive Bike Plan, I relied on the data from our Vision Zero report that showed how biking infrastructure would make our roads safer and save lives.
Collaboration
If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. Oak Park has 6 separate government bodies that provide services and education to our community. As a Village Trustee, I see it as my duty to collaborate with these bodies whenever we can.
In November 2025 at the height of Operation Midway Blitz, I co-sponsored and passed the ICE Free Zones ordinance to prohibit the use of Village property as a “staging area, processing location, or operations base for the purpose of civil immigration enforcement,” and we successfully coordinated with the Oak Park Library and Township to do the same. Collaborating with my colleagues on other boards resulted in successful policy alignment across the Village, and better public service for our community. I will continue this collaborative approach with partners throughout Oak Park.
Progressive values
Oak Park is a very progressive village, and it deserves leaders that are not only in tune with progressive values, but are willing to stand up and fight for them. As our country reels from the oppression and chaos from the Trump Administration, it’s now more important than ever to stand up for racial equity, LGBTQ+ and reproductive rights, income equality, and of course, climate action, so everyone in Oak Park can thrive here.
That is why I will continue to support more affordable housing, strengthening and acting upon our Welcoming Village Ordinance, aligning our investments with our values, and eliminating racist policing practices.
I can’t do this alone, and that’s why I’m asking for your support:
Onward to April 6, 2027!
