With global temperatures predicted to rise to 1.5 to 3 degrees by 2100, we've already started to bend the temperature curve down to avoid the climate apocalypse.

But 3 degrees of warming is still really bad. Ecosystems will break down, intense hurricanes and fires will increase. Hundreds of millions of people will be displaced from their homes.

It's up to us to keep bending that curve down below 2 degrees warming by 2100.

You can do something about climate change, and it will make a difference

@derekeder

But what? You may have heard some advice on how you can stop climate change.

Recycle!
Eat less meat!
Take the bus!
Don't use plastic straws!

These are efficiency and lifestyle changes. Even if we all do them, it will only reduce emissions 10-15%. By all means, do them, but don't stop there ...

We need to focus on the bigger picture

And look to the biggest sources of climate pollution: the machines we use to heat our homes, cook our food, get us places, and produce our power

Replacing these dirty machines with clean ones is known as ✨clean electrification ✨

If you look at the problem from this angle, we can start tackling the biggest sources of emissions with the same playbook: Electrify Everything

@derekeder

http://decarbmystate.com helps with this by organizing all the emissions and electrification data for each state in one place

@derekeder

It allows us to look at each state (plus DC), and count all the emissions for each and where they come from

We can see CO2 equivalent emissions over time and how much each state has to reduce by 2050.

Let's look at Illinois:

We count and name every coal, gas and oil plant that needs to close

And we track how many of our buildings and cars have been electrified and how much wind and solar has been built

If we focus on electrification, we can take a huge step (65%) in eliminating climate pollution permanently. It's not everything, but its a big start
